Allergy Medicine in Cabo: A Traveler Guide

New foods, unfamiliar plants, marine life and dusty desert air can all stir up allergies in Cabo. Here is what to know about managing them and getting the right medicine delivered to your hotel.

Antihistamines, your everyday tool

For sneezing, itchy eyes, hives or mild reactions, antihistamines are the mainstay — loratadine (Claritin/Clarityne), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) are all available in Mexico under the same or similar names. Non-drowsy options suit daytime; diphenhydramine is more sedating. We can deliver them to your hotel.

Common Cabo triggers

Shellfish and unfamiliar foods, insect and marine stings, certain plants and pollens, and even a new sunscreen or detergent can trigger reactions. If you have known allergies, pack your usual medication and any prescribed emergency treatment.

When it is more than mild

A spreading rash, persistent hives, or facial swelling that is not improving should be seen by a doctor, who can prescribe stronger treatment. And know the emergency signs: difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, widespread hives with dizziness — that is anaphylaxis, which needs an epinephrine auto-injector if prescribed and emergency services immediately. Our guide on allergic reactions on vacation covers this in depth.

If you carry an EpiPen

Travel with your prescribed epinephrine auto-injector and tell your companions where it is and how to use it. Heat can affect it, so keep it out of direct sun.

This article is general information for travelers, not medical advice. For prescriptions or if symptoms are serious, consult a doctor — ours are bilingual and available 24/7.

Don’t let a reaction ruin the day

Most allergy flare-ups on vacation are mild and quickly tamed, but the key is acting early and having the right thing on hand. A single antihistamine at the first itch or sneeze usually heads off a miserable afternoon, whereas waiting until you are covered in hives makes it harder to settle. So if you know you react to shellfish, certain plants or insect stings, keep an antihistamine accessible rather than buried in a suitcase. For Cabo specifically, two triggers catch people off guard: marine life (jellyfish, stingrays) and a reaction to an unfamiliar sunscreen or detergent, which can mimic a heat rash. If a reaction is spreading or not responding, a doctor can prescribe a short course of something stronger. The non-negotiable, though, is recognizing a serious reaction: any trouble breathing, throat or lip swelling, or dizziness after exposure is a medical emergency needing epinephrine and emergency services, not an antihistamine. If you carry an auto-injector, keep it cool and tell your companions where it is. Handled early and sensibly, allergies are a footnote to a great trip rather than the thing everyone remembers.
