Stretcher Flights from Cabo: A Middle Option Between Commercial and Air Ambulance
Between a medical escort flight (commercial, stable patient, ~$5K) and a dedicated air ambulance (private jet, $35K+), there’s a third option fewer travelers know about: a stretcher flight on a commercial airline. The patient lies flat on a stretcher installed across a row of business-class seats, with a medical escort onboard.
How a stretcher flight works
Airlines like Delta, American, United, Lufthansa, and Air Canada have stretcher kits that install over a row of 6–9 business-class seats. The patient rides flat, IV pole and medical equipment beside them, attended by a nurse or paramedic. The remaining business-class cabin is a normal commercial flight for other passengers.
When this option makes sense
- The patient is stable but cannot sit upright for the entire flight (post-op spinal, advanced pregnancy complications, severe musculoskeletal injury).
- You want the cost savings vs full air ambulance (~50% cheaper).
- The flight route is well-served by commercial carriers with stretcher kits.
Typical cost
Total cost typically US $15,000–$30,000 — you “buy out” 6–9 business-class seats (the airline price), plus the stretcher kit fee, plus the medical escort. Still significantly cheaper than a private jet air ambulance for the same distance.
Trade-offs vs air ambulance
Commercial schedules don’t always align with patient needs. You may wait 24–72 hours for an available stretcher kit and route. Air ambulance is “wheels up when ready” — commercial is “we book you on Tuesday’s flight.”
