Heart Attack in Cabo: What American & Canadian Tourists Should Know

Cardiac events are one of the leading reasons tourists need emergency care in Mexico — especially among travelers 50+. The good news: time-to-treatment in Cabo can be excellent if you know who to call. The bad news: many minutes are wasted by travelers who don’t know the system.

Recognize the warning signs

Classic symptoms: chest pain or pressure (often described as squeezing or heavy), shortness of breath, pain radiating to arm, jaw or back, nausea, cold sweat. Women, diabetics and seniors often have atypical presentations — fatigue, indigestion-like discomfort, jaw pain without chest pain.

The first 3 minutes matter most

Call our 24/7 line AND 911 in parallel. Don’t drive yourself to the hospital — that delays treatment and risks a crash. Ground ambulance with cardiac monitors and medications en route is the goal.

What happens at the partner hospital

A leading private hospital in Los Cabos has cardiac catheterization capability, ICU and trained interventional cardiologists. For an acute STEMI (the most dangerous heart attack), the protocol is: emergency cath lab within 90 minutes, balloon angioplasty and stent placement. This matches U.S. and Canadian standards of care.

If you have a cardiac history

  • Bring a list of medications including doses.
  • Bring a copy of your last EKG (electrocardiogram) if you have one.
  • Bring contact info for your cardiologist at home.
  • Travel insurance with $250K+ evac and $500K+ medical is non-negotiable.

After treatment: stay or fly home?

Patients are usually monitored locally for 3–7 days post-procedure before being cleared to fly. Once stable, repatriation home by air ambulance or stretcher flight is straightforward. Your travel-insurance assistance line and our team coordinate.
