IV Therapy for Food Poisoning in Cabo — When the Tap Water Hits You Hard

Food poisoning or “Montezuma’s revenge” is one of the most common reasons travelers seek medical help in Cabo. Severe vomiting and diarrhea cause dehydration fast, and a medical IV gets you back on your feet hours faster than oral rehydration alone.

What food poisoning IV usually contains

A doctor-prescribed IV for food poisoning typically combines: balanced electrolyte fluids to replace what’s lost, anti-nausea medication (commonly ondansetron) to stop the vomiting, an anti-spasmodic for cramping if needed, electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium), and B-complex vitamins. In some cases an antibiotic is added when bacterial cause is suspected.

Why a medical IV beats sports drinks

When you’re vomiting, oral fluids come right back up. IV bypasses the gut completely — the medications work in 5–10 minutes and you stop feeling sick fast. Sports drinks are useful for mild dehydration but inadequate for active food poisoning.

When food poisoning needs more than an IV

Red flags: bloody stool, high fever (>102°F), severe abdominal pain in one spot, no urination for many hours, dizziness when standing. These need physician evaluation and possibly hospital admission. We screen for these before starting the IV.

How to get the IV fast

Call us. We’ll send a doctor to your hotel within 45 minutes (most of Los Cabos), or you walk into our downtown clinic. IV starts within 10 minutes of arrival.

FAQ

How fast will I feel better?

Most patients feel significantly better within 30 minutes of the IV starting — the anti-nausea medication works that quickly.

Do I need antibiotics for food poisoning?

Sometimes — depends on cause. Our doctor evaluates whether antibiotics are appropriate.

Can I get this if I’m pregnant?

Yes — many medications are pregnancy-safe. Tell us you’re pregnant when you call and the doctor adjusts the IV accordingly.

Should I keep eating or fast?

After the IV, clear fluids and bland foods (rice, banana, toast) for 24 hours. The doctor gives a written plan.

Will travel insurance cover this?

Most quality travel-insurance policies cover IV for diagnosed food poisoning. Itemized English invoice provided.
