Spinal Injury at the Pool or While Snorkeling in Cabo — What to Do
Diving headfirst into a shallow pool, hitting a wave wrong while snorkeling, or a rough fall — spinal injuries are one of the most serious vacation accidents. The first response can change the outcome.
If you suspect spinal injury
DO NOT MOVE the patient unless they are in immediate danger (drowning, fire). Movement can convert a stable injury into permanent paralysis. Keep their head and neck aligned with the body. Call for help immediately.
If patient is in water
Support their head and neck while keeping them face-up. Float them gently to the edge with minimal head movement. Use a flotation device under their back if available. Wait for trained help unless they will drown.
Symptoms of spinal injury
Severe neck or back pain after impact, weakness or numbness in arms or legs, inability to move limbs, loss of bladder or bowel control, difficulty breathing.
At the hospital
Cervical collar applied, imaging (CT and/or MRI of spine), neurosurgical consultation. Treatment ranges from observation to surgical stabilization.
After stabilization
Most spinal injury patients are eventually repatriated for ongoing rehabilitation. Air ambulance often required for safe transport.
