Why labs sometimes come before the IV
Most IVs in healthy adults don’t need labs first. But for some patients — severe vomiting, suspected electrolyte derangement, diuretic users, kidney disease, diabetes, post-ER discharge — the doctor wants real numbers before deciding which bag and which additives.
What we can run same-day
- Basic metabolic panel (BMP): sodium, potassium, chloride, CO2, BUN, creatinine, glucose.
- CBC: hemoglobin, hematocrit, white-cell count, platelets.
- Liver panel: AST, ALT, bilirubin, alkaline phosphatase.
- Pregnancy (urine or quantitative hCG).
- Inflammatory markers (CRP, ESR) for suspected infection.
- Urinalysis for suspected UTI.
- Stool studies for persistent diarrhea.
