Getting a Prescription as a Tourist in Mexico

Pharmacy rules in Mexico differ from those at home, which surprises a lot of visitors. Here is what you need to know to get the medication you need, legally and safely, while in Cabo.

What you can and cannot buy over the counter

Many medications that need a prescription in the US or Canada are available over the counter in Mexico, while others — especially antibiotics and controlled substances — now require a Mexican prescription. Rules have tightened, so do not assume.

If you forgot your medication at home

This is common. A video or house-call doctor can review what you take and prescribe a local equivalent. Bring a photo of your prescription label or bottle to make it easy.

Controlled medications

Strong painkillers, certain anxiety and ADHD medications and similar controlled drugs are tightly regulated. A licensed local doctor must assess and prescribe these; pharmacies cannot simply hand them over, and you should never buy them informally.

Getting meds delivered

Once you have a prescription, we can deliver the medication to your hotel — no taxi, no translation, no guessing at the counter. We can also bring everyday essentials like rehydration salts and anti-nausea tablets.

Bringing medication into Mexico

Travel with medication in its original labeled container and carry a copy of your prescription, especially for controlled drugs. Keep quantities reasonable for your trip length.

This article is general information for visitors, not medical advice. If symptoms are severe or worrying, see a doctor — we can have one at your hotel 24/7.
