Swimmer’s Ear After Diving or Snorkeling in Cabo

Cabo’s water activities are unforgettable, but trapped water and irritation can lead to swimmer’s ear (otitis externa), one of the more common complaints we treat. Here is what to know.

What it is

Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the outer ear canal, usually from water that stays trapped after swimming, snorkeling or diving, creating a moist environment where bacteria grow. It is different from a middle-ear infection.

Symptoms

Itching, then increasing ear pain (often worse when you tug the earlobe), redness, a feeling of fullness, and sometimes drainage or muffled hearing. Fever or pain spreading to the face or neck means you should be seen promptly.

Treatment

Mild cases may settle with keeping the ear dry and over-the-counter pain relief, but most need prescription antibiotic ear drops. A bilingual doctor can examine the ear, prescribe drops, and we can deliver them to your hotel. Don’t put cotton swabs or fingers in the ear, which worsens it.

Diving note

Ear pain during descent can also be a barotrauma (pressure) issue rather than infection. If you are diving and have ear pain, stop diving and get assessed before going back down.

Prevention

Tilt and dry your ears after swimming, use swimmer’s earplugs, and consider drying drops if you are prone to it.

This article is general information for visitors, not medical advice. If symptoms are severe or worrying, see a doctor — we can have one at your hotel 24/7.
