How to File a Travel Insurance Claim from Mexico — Step-by-Step

Filing a travel insurance claim after a medical visit in Mexico is mostly paperwork. Get it right and reimbursement is straightforward; get it wrong and it can drag on for months. Here is the practical step-by-step.

Step 1: Call your insurer’s 24/7 line BEFORE or DURING care

The insurer’s emergency assistance number is on the back of your insurance card. Call it immediately to open a case. Many policies require notification within 24 hours of an emergency to preserve full benefits.

Step 2: Get the right documentation at the clinic/hospital

Itemized invoice in English with: diagnostic codes (ICD-10), procedure codes (CPT or equivalent), provider name and Mexican medical license, clinic/hospital name and tax ID, date(s) of service, USD prices, payment proof. We provide all this automatically.

Step 3: Submit the claim

Most insurers accept online submission via their app or portal. Required: claim form, invoice, payment proof, brief description of the medical situation, your policy number. Keep copies of everything.

Step 4: Follow up

Most claims process in 2-6 weeks. If pending more than 30 days, call. If denied, request explanation and file an appeal.

Step 5: Appeal if needed

If the insurer denies, you can appeal with additional documentation. We provide additional records in English at no charge. Many denials are reversed on appeal with proper documentation.

FAQ

Can the insurer pay the hospital directly?

Sometimes for major care via pre-authorization. For clinic visits, pay-and-reimburse is standard.

What if I don’t have receipts?

Contact the provider — we can re-issue.

How much can I expect to be reimbursed?

Depends on your policy. Quality plans typically reimburse 80-100% of medically necessary care within policy limits.

What if my claim is denied?

Request the specific reason in writing. Most denials can be appealed with additional documentation.

Should I use a claim service or do it myself?

Most travelers do it themselves. Complex cases benefit from a public adjuster or claim service.
