How to Tell If You Broke a Bone on Vacation in Cabo — When to Get an X-Ray
Wrist, ankle and clavicle injuries are common Cabo vacation injuries. Telling a sprain from a fracture isn’t always obvious. Here are the signs that mean get imaging.
Signs you may have a fracture
Inability to bear weight (ankle) or use the limb, severe pain not relieved with rest and ice, visible deformity, swelling that’s marked and rapid, point tenderness over a bone, numbness or color change downstream.
Sprains vs fractures
Sprains can be very painful too. Differences: sprains usually allow some movement; fractures often don’t. Sprains hurt mostly with movement; fractures hurt with pressure on the bone too. When in doubt, get imaging.
What to do meanwhile
RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation). Don’t push through pain. Get evaluated within 24 hours for any suspected fracture.
At the clinic
Doctor evaluation, X-ray as needed, splinting if fracture confirmed. Most stable fractures can be splinted and you can fly home; some need surgical fixation locally.

FAQ
Should I wait to see if it gets better?
For minor injuries, 24-48 hours is reasonable. For severe pain or inability to use the limb, evaluate sooner.
Will travel insurance cover the X-ray?
Yes — medically necessary X-ray for injury is standard covered care.
Can I fly home with a fracture?
Most fractures can be splinted and flown home. Some require surgical stabilization first.
What about a hairline fracture?
Can be missed on initial X-ray. If symptoms persist, follow up after 7-10 days for repeat imaging.
At-home care after the visit?
RICE, elevation, weight-bearing as tolerated, follow-up with orthopedic at home for definitive care.
