Cabo and the corridor see hundreds of medical-tourism patients each month — dental implants, bariatric surgery, plastic surgery, orthopedic procedures, eye care. Most return to their hotels or recovery villas within hours, with a discharge plan that includes oral hydration and prescription medications. What’s often missing is the IV support layer for the first 48–72 hours, when the body is doing the bulk of its early recovery.

Why early post-op recovery benefits from IV

  • Volume status: surgery, anesthesia, and reduced oral intake leave most patients mildly dehydrated for 24–72 hours post-op.
  • Nausea: anesthesia and opioids commonly cause post-op nausea; IV anti-emetic works when oral can’t stay down.
  • Pain control: when oral meds aren’t quite enough or aren’t tolerated, an IV adjunct (Toradol if not contraindicated) bridges.
  • Electrolyte rebalancing: particularly after bariatric surgery where oral absorption changes overnight.
  • IV antibiotics for documented infections or extended prophylaxis when prescribed.

What we coordinate with

Bring the discharge summary, prescription list, and the surgeon’s contact information. Our physician will:

  • Review the operative note and discharge plan.
  • Check vital signs, surgical site (visual, with permission), and any drains or stitches.
  • Choose an IV that complements (not duplicates) what the surgeon ordered.
  • Communicate with the surgeon’s office if anything looks off.
  • Document the visit for travel insurance and for your home physician.

Common medical-tourism surgeries we support after

  • Bariatric surgery (gastric sleeve, bypass) — high risk for dehydration in the first 7–14 days. Doctor-supervised IV is often what bariatric clinics recommend during recovery.
  • Plastic surgery (breast, BBL, lipo, tummy tuck) — pain control, anti-emetics, hydration.
  • Dental implants and oral surgery — limited oral intake post-op; IV fluids and analgesia.
  • Orthopedic surgery — pain control adjuncts, mobility recovery support.
  • Cataract / eye surgery — anti-emetic for post-anesthesia nausea, hydration.

Mobile to your recovery hotel or villa

Most medical-tourism patients are recovering in a comfortable hotel or villa. Our mobile team brings the IV to your room across Cabo, the corridor, and San José del Cabo so you don’t have to travel post-op. We also offer in-home nurse IV for repeat visits and in-room nurse care for higher-touch recovery.

When to escalate

  • Fever in the first 72 hours post-op, particularly with surgical-site redness or drainage.
  • Excessive pain beyond what was anticipated.
  • Bleeding from the wound or drain.
  • Signs of DVT (calf swelling, redness, tenderness).
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Confusion.

For any of these we coordinate directly with the surgeon and our emergency care pathway.

What this is NOT a substitute for

  • Surgical follow-up with your operating surgeon.
  • Pathology results or imaging coordinated by the surgical center.
  • Drain removal, suture removal, or wound revision — those go back to the surgeon.

Pricing

Post-op IV bundle: typically $169–$259 depending on what’s added (anti-emetic, pain control, antibiotics if prescribed). Add the house-call doctor visit ($200) for a full medical reassessment if you’re not confident. Multi-day packages available for extended recoveries.

Frequently asked questions

Will the surgeon mind if I get an IV elsewhere?

Most do not. We share the chart note with your surgeon on request to keep care coordinated.

Can you give IV antibiotics at my hotel after surgery?

Yes when prescribed by your surgeon or our physician. See our in-home nurse IV page.

What if I had bariatric surgery and can’t tolerate much fluid?

The doctor will use smaller, slower IVs and coordinate with your bariatric team.

Is post-op IV covered by my medical-tourism package?

Some are, some aren’t. Check with the surgical center. We provide an itemized invoice either way.
